    Band gaps in the relaxed linear micromorphic continuum

    In this note we show that the relaxed linear micromorphic model recently proposed by the authors can be suitably used to describe the presence of band-gaps in metamaterials with microstructures in which strong contrasts of the mechanical properties are present (e.g. phononic crystals and lattice structures). This relaxed micromorphic model only has 6 constitutive parameters instead of 18 parameters needed in Mindlin- and Eringen-type classical micromorphic models. We show that the onset of band-gaps is related to a unique constitutive parameter, the Cosserat couple modulus ÎĽc\mu_{c} which starts to account for band-gaps when reaching a suitable threshold value. The limited number of parameters of our model, as well as the specific effect of some of them on wave propagation can be seen as an important step towards indirect measurement campaigns

    Methylglyoxal-dependent glycative stress and deregulation of SIRT1 functional network in the ovary of PCOS mice

    Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are involved in the pathogenesis and consequences of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a complex metabolic disorder associated with female infertility. The most powerful AGE precursor is methylglyoxal (MG), a byproduct of glycolysis, that is detoxified by the glyoxalase system. By using a PCOS mouse model induced by administration of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), we investigated whether MG-dependent glycative stress contributes to ovarian PCOS phenotype and explored changes in the Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) functional network regulating mitochondrial functions and cell survival. In addition to anovulation and reduced oocyte quality, DHEA ovaries revealed altered collagen deposition, increased vascularization, lipid droplets accumulation and altered steroidogenesis. Here we observed increased intraovarian MG-AGE levels in association with enhanced expression of receptor for AGEs (RAGEs) and deregulation of the glyoxalase system, hallmarks of glycative stress. Moreover, DHEA mice exhibited enhanced ovarian expression of SIRT1 along with increased protein levels of SIRT3 and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), and decreased peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma co-activator 1 alpha (PGC1 alpha), mitochondrial transcriptional factor A (mtTFA) and translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 20 (TOMM20). Finally, the presence of autophagy protein markers and increased AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) suggested the involvement of SIRT1/AMPK axis in autophagy activation. Overall, present findings demonstrate that MG-dependent glycative stress is involved in ovarian dysfunctions associated to PCOS and support the hypothesis of a SIRT1-dependent adaptive response

    Dynamic Beam Based Calibration of Beam Position Monitors

    The degree of spin polarization at LEP is strongly dependent on the knowledge of the vertical orbit. Quadrupole magnet alignment and beam position monitor (BPM) offsets are the main source of the orbi t uncertainty. The error of the orbit monitor readings can be largely reduced by calibrating the monitor relative to the adjacent quadrupole. At LEP, 16 BPM offsets can be determined in parallel durin g 40 minutes. The error of the measure offset is about 30mm. During the LEP run 1997, more than 500 measurements were made and used for the optimisation of polarization. The method of dynamic beam bas ed calibration will be explained and the results will be shown

    Calibration of centre-of-mass energies at LEP 2 for a precise measurement of the W boson mass

    The determination of the centre-of-mass energies for all LEP 2 running is presented. Accurate knowledge of these energies is of primary importance to set the absolute energy scale for the measurement of the W boson mass. The beam energy between 80 and 104 GeV is derived from continuous measurements of the magnetic bending field by 16 NMR probes situated in a number of the LEP dipoles. The relationship between the fields measured by the probes and the beam energy is defined in the NMR model, which is calibrated against precise measurements of the average beam energy between 41 and 61 GeV made using the resonant depolarisation technique. The validity of the NMR model is verified by three independent methods: the flux-loop, which is sensitive to the bending field of all the dipoles of LEP; the spectrometer, which determines the energy through measurements of the deflection of the beam in a magnet of known integrated field; and an analysis of the variation of the synchrotron tune with the total RF voltage. To obtain the centre-of-mass energies, corrections are then applied to account for sources of bending field external to the dipoles, and variations in the local beam energy at each interaction point. The relative error on the centre-of-mass energy determination for the majority of LEP 2 running is 1.2 x 10^{-4}, which is sufficiently precise so as not to introduce a dominant uncertainty on the W mass measurement.Comment: 79 pages, 45 figures, submitted to EPJ

    Prevalence of psychiatric disorders in thyroid diseased patients.

    Several studies have underlined the high prevalence of psychiatric symptoms and disorders in thyroid diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in 93 inpatients affected by different thyroid diseases during their lifetimes, by means of a standardized instrument, i.e., the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III-Revised, Upjohn Version (SCID-UP-R). The results showed higher rates of panic disorder, simple phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and cyclothymia in thyroid patients than in the general population. These findings would suggest that the co-occurrence of psychiatric and thyroid diseases may be the result of common biochemical abnormalities

    Impact of DEL22q11, trisomy 21, and other genetic syndromes on surgical outcome of conotruncal heart defects

    Objective: Genetic syndromes occur in more than 20% of patients with conotruncal heart defects. We investigated the impact of genetic syndromes on the surgical outcome of conotruncal anomalies in infancy. Methods: This retrospective study reviews the outcome of 787 patients (median age 6.3 months) who underwent primary (598) or staged (189) repair of a conotruncal defect between 1992 and 2007. Results: Proven genetic syndrome was diagnosed in 211 patients (26.8%), including del22q11 (91 patients), trisomy 21 (29 patients), VACTERL (18 patients), and other syndromes (73 patients). Primary repair was accomplished in 80.9% of nonsyndromic patients and 74.4% of syndromic patients (P ¼ .18) Fifteen-year cumulative survival was 84.3% 2.3% in nonsyndromic patients and 73.2% 4.2% in syndromic patients (P<.001). Primary and staged repair allowed similar 15-year survival (81.4% 4.5% vs 79.1% 5.1%, P ¼ .8). Freedom from noncardiac cause of death was significantly lower in syndromic patients (P ¼ .0056). Fifteen- year Kaplan–Meier survival was 87.6% 3.9% for del22q11, 95.8% 4.1% for trisomy 21, 56.8% 6.3% for VACTERL, and 62.3% 12.7% for patients with other syndromes (P ¼ .022). Total intensive care unit stay was 10.8 4.9 days in syndromic patients and 5.1 1.7 days in nonsyndromic patients (P<.001). Freedom from reintervention 15 years after repair was 79.6% 4.9%in nonsyndromic patients and 62.4% 7.4%in syndromic patients (P ¼ .007). Conclusion: Del22q11 and trisomy 21 do not represent risk factors for mortality after repair of conotruncal anomalies, whereas other syndromes adversely affect the surgical outcome for predominant noncardiac attrition. Higher morbidity and lower mid-term freedom from reintervention can be predicted in syndromic patients

    Protective effects of a SIRT1 inhibitor on primordial follicle activation and growth induced by cyclophosphamide: insights from a bovine in vitro folliculogenesis system

    Purpose: Although oncological advances have improved survival rates of female cancer patients, they often suffer a reduced fertility due to treatment side effects. In the present study, we evaluated the potential fertoprotective effects of the specific inhibitor of SIRT1, EX-527, on the gonadotoxic action exerted by cyclophosphamide (CPM) on loss of primordial follicles (PFs). Methods: The effects of the CPM metabolite phosphoramide mustard (PM) on follicle activation, growth and viability and the protective action of EX-527 against PM effects were evaluated on bovine ovarian cortical strips in vitro cultured for 1 or 6 days. To understand whether PFs exposed to PM plus EX-527 were able to activate and grow to the secondary stage after suspension of the treatment, strips cultured for 3 days in PM plus EX-527 for 3 days were transferred to plain medium until day 6. Follicle growth and health were evaluated through histology and viability assay at a confocal microscope. In order to investigate the molecular pathways underlying the ovarian response to PM in the presence of EX-527, we analysed the protein level of SIRT1, HuR, PARP1 and SOD2 after 1 day of in vitro culture. Results: We found that (1) PM, the main CPM active metabolite, promotes PF activation; (2) the ovarian stress response induced by PM includes a SIRT1-dependent pathway; and (3) EX-527 reduces PF activation and growth induced by PM. Conclusion: SIRT1 can represent a candidate molecule to be targeted to protect ovarian follicles from alkylating agents and EX-527 could represent a potential fertoprotective agent for cancer patients

Stuttering can be neurogenic (or acquired) as a result of stroke, head injury and degenerative or metabolic brain damage (Grant et al., 1999)

    The effects of LHC civil engineering on the SPS and LEP machines

    The LHC will utilise much of the existing LEP infrastructure but will require many new surface buildings and several smaller underground structures, two new transfer tunnels from the SPS to the LHC an d two huge cavern complexes to house the ATLAS and CMS experiments. Excavation for the underground structures will start while LEP and SPS are running, causig the existing tunnels in close proximity t o move. The predicted movements are of sufficient amplitude to prevent machine oepration if no precautions are taken
